What Is Galaxy’s Edge?

Galaxy’s Edge is Disney World’s newest and most anticipated land to date. It is the largest expansion in Disney World’s history at 14 acres. Galaxy’s Edge is located in Hollywood Studios and is an incredible addition to the park. It connects Toy Story Land to Muppets Courtyard (it makes for a nice loop to the outer edge of the park).

Galaxy’s Edge is an ultra-immersive land that is set on the planet Batuu during the most recent trilogy (think Team Rey-Lo). Batuu is a planet on the outer-rim. This planet used to be a great place for smugglers to hang out and sell their goods at the Black Spire Outpost but recently the First Order and Resistance have started to show up. This has made this planet a powder-keg of activity with everyone on high alert.

When we say highly immersive, we mean it. Every cast member has a story of how they came to Batuu. All of the food is themed to the planet. Characters from the movie walk through very frequently and are constantly interactive with the guest. The shops go perfectly with the land. The detail in theming is maybe the best we have ever seen. It really is incredible!

What Can You Do At Galaxy’s Edge

Though Batuu is only one land, you could actually spend a whole day exploring and still have more to see. There have been a lot of mixed reviews about Galaxy’s Edge. We think one of the reasons for this is because people don’t realize everything this place has to offer. So, what can you do?

Explore The Land

Batuu is broken up into three main areas. The covert Resistance post is a wooded area located by the main entrance through the cave by Muppets Courtyard. The Black Spire Outpost, is the market area on Batuu located in the center of the land. The First Order cargo area is a more industrialized part of the Outpost located on the Toy Story entrance side. Each area is unique and offers you a different way to immerse yourself in the Star Wars experience.

In order to truly enjoy Galaxy’s Edge you need to pay attention to every detail. The Imagineers did an amazing job and they really crushed it with this. Everywhere you turn there are nods to the movies (not just the new ones). We loved walking around just looking for those little Easter eggs. You can do this for hours. We loved the droids, the speeders, the antennas – everything we have seen from the movies. We really felt like we were transported to another planet.

One really great thing they have around Galaxy’s Edge is the amount of Photo Pass options you have. That is good because there are a ton of places you want to get pictures from. They have them at all the ships. They also have two special Photo Pass picture spots – the zoom out near the Falcon and the overhead shot in front of Kylo Ren’s command shuttle. Ask the cast members around there and they will get you in the right direction. These lines are typically longer.

Don’t try and zoom through this land. Carve out AT LEAST half a day to just wander around and explore. Also, it is totally different day and night. We highly recommend going both times.

Rides

There are two rides planned for Galaxy’s Edge. As of the writing of this post, only one of them is open.

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

Ok, this ride lets you get in the Millennium Falcon and actually pilot it. It is located in between the First Order cargo area and Black Spire Outpost. It is way better than we thought it would be. The whole ride is awesome from the queue to the exit. It made it pretty high on our Disney World ride rankings. The premise of the ride is you have been hired by the smuggler Hondo to grab some coaxium which is a space element that helps with faster than light speed. You are part of a crew of six that has to work together to complete your mission. This ride is different than other simulators because how the crew works together effects how successful you will be in your mission. This ride is a combo of Star Tours, Mission: Space, Mania! and Flight of Passage. It is really cool.

There are three different roles – pilot, gunner, engineer. Each has two people.

• The left pilot moves the Falcon side to side while the right pilot moves the Falcon up and down. You really have to work together on this. The pilots have to put the ship through some really tight spots. The right pilot also makes the jump to light speed. One of the highlights for me was when Silas and I were pilots I got to yell out to him, “punch it, Chewie!”.
• The gunner has the responsibility of shooting the TIE Fighters that are after you as well as shooting the trains that are carrying the coaxium that you are after. There are two different modes for gunner – manual and automatic. Automatic is easier (good for kids) but will earn you less credits. Manual is more difficult, but probably more fun if you are after a challenge and the more credits you will earn.
• The last position is the engineer. This position is the back row and is responsible for fixing any damage that the Falcon takes on and firing the harpoons to the two trains with the coaxium. You do this by pressing buttons on the wall. Most people are saying that this is the worst of the three positions. If you are riding single rider this is where they will most likely place you. If you want that pilot position, your best bet is to wait in line.

At the end of the ride Hondo gives you credits based on how much coaxium you got and how much damage you caused to the Falcon. This stays with you through your magic band and if you are playing the Play Disney App game it adds up to your overall account.

As great as the ride is, the best part of the whole thing could be the holding area between the queue and the cockpit. The holding area is the inside of the Falcon. You get to walk through the hallways, sit around the round space chess table, and check out all of the nooks and crannies to see some really cool details. You are on the Millennium Falcon, need we say more. It was so fun for this Star Wars family.

Right now there is no FASTPASS for this ride. They will eventually go to it but I think that is a mistake. We rode it three times and waited 30, 40, and 60 minutes respectively. There is a ton to look at in the queue. Plus, the Play Disney game keeps you busy.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

Rise of the Resistance is located in the Resistance forest area as you are coming in through the tunnel. This ride is not opening until December 5th but it is unlike anything that Disney has ever done. This ride is the big one for the land which is saying something because the Falcon is so great. When we check this out we will make sure to update this post.

Black Spire Outpost Shopping

Another highlight of this land is the market area and other shops spread around. Each shop has their own goods and wares that they specialize in. We loved looking at all the little details of the shops. The market place has an open air feel where different local vendors have set up shop. The merchandise here was pretty unique and had many things we haven’t seen at any other Disney shops.

Just a heads up, this area can get a little congested as it also holds bathrooms and a couple of food locations. We hopped in and out of the other stores they had scattered throughout the land. Make sure you check each of them out! The displays alone are worth it. Many droids from movie sets are found in these locations and other fun props. And bonus, if it is a hot day you can take a break in some air!

Build Something

One great way Galaxy’s Edge is immersive is how you are able to build your own souvenirs. Leave it to Disney to save on labor costs by getting its guests to do the work but selling it as a fun thing to them. Genius. There are two ways you can do this – by building a droid or building a lightsaber. Both of these are awesome and both allow you to pick out what you want and put it together.

Droid Depot

The droid experience was super fun. This is what Silas really wanted to do so we surprised him with it on our last day. We are glad that he wanted to do this instead of the lightsaber because this was half the cost. To build a droid you pay $100 to pick out your parts and put it together. In my mind – $25 for the experience and $75 for the droid. Not cheap but worth it. You can make a reservation and we highly recommend doing that. We did standby and waited a total of about an hour. The reservations walked right up and got to it. It is important to note that only two people can go back to build the droid. For this one Megan sat out and watched from behind the barrier they had.

You can choose between building a BB unit or an R2 unit. Silas went with an R2 unit (raising him right!) and named him R2-35, or Rob for short. You pay first and then they give you a basket for all of the parts you need to pick off the conveyer belt. At the bottom of the basket is a map of what parts you need. It is really clear and easy. There are plenty of options on the belt and they are constantly replacing and refilling. There are a ton of different color and model options.

After you pick up your parts you move over to the assembly station. This is really cool. There are cast members to help you but it is pretty simple. Silas loved using the screw gun and putting it together. After assembly, the cast member leads you through the activating process. This is where your droid comes to life and it is super cool. It is synced up to the remote and starts to talk and move. There is an additional personality chip that you can upgrade to. We did not do this and don’t regret it. There is enough personality as is.

After you get activated, you can head outside and take your droid for a test run. We highly recommend this especially if you have a BB unit. We had someone in front of us go out to check theirs and it didn’t work. If they had gone home they would be out $100. Silas has played with Rob a bunch and has had no problem. Now if we can just program him to bring us drinks.

Savi’s Workshop

We did not personally build a lightsaber but we went with a couple of people who did. They both loved the experience and would recommend it. Like the droid factory, you can pick out the different parts of the lightsaber and construct your own. The key is the Kyber crystal. That will determine the color of your saber. You definitely should get a reservation unless you are going late for this experience. Every time we went by there was a line of people with reservations waiting for their time. This is really popular. Lightsabers costs $200 if you build your own.

Eating and Drinking

This land offers a lot of unique dining options and experiences! Hands down the one thing you must do is try the blue milk! They actually have two options – blue and green. This drink is actually not milk at all but is dairy free and has a smoothie/slushy consistency. It’s very refreshing on a hot day!

I can’t even begin to explain what they taste like. It’s weird..but good..but weird. Meg actually loved the blue milk so much she had 3 over the course of the week. Silas and Justin – one was enough! We definitely recommend blue over green! The blue and green milk is found at one of the stands in the black spire outpost.

For dining options you can choose from a couple of quick service places like Docking Bay 7, Ronto Roasters and Kat Saka’s Kettle. You can also make a reservation for Oga’s Cantina, which is highly recommended. The line was always out the door and wrapped around to get in! The food in this land sounds like it would be weird but everything we have heard is that it’s pretty good. The Ronto Roaster is a must try and the flavored popcorn is a great snack to grab while you walk around and explore!

Play The App

This is one of the most unknown and under appreciated parts of Galaxy’s Edge. If you are going, download the Play Disney app and start playing. The reason this is so cool is because it causes you to see parts of the land and the details in it that you would otherwise miss. This app allows you to complete different jobs around the Outpost in order to gain credits and move up in the ranks of the different groups you can work for.

Your smartphone is your datapad which has all of the devices you need to hack, scan, tune, and translate around the land. As you do this, you can explore and earn credits. You can also access different jobs by looking through the map. As you scan different cargo you can find equipment, clothing, and weapons that you can use. As you go through the land, people will start to recognize you for how you are playing the game. This app is a game changer and enhances the experience of traveling to Batuu. Download it is you are going!

Talk To Cast Members

Finally, talk to the cast members. All of these people have spent a lot of time coming up with their own backstories of how they ended up at Batuu. Honestly, at the beginning we were kind of weirded out by it, but after a while we got used to it and just went with it. We learned a lot about the galaxy far far away and loved the enthusiasm that the cast members had for their roles. This is just another way that this land is so immersive.

If you see characters wandering around and want to interact with them you have to do more than ask to take a picture (scans) with them. You have to join them in the story. Pick a side – Resistance, First Order, or Smuggler – and join the story. When you do that you will have some great interactions and a lot of fun. It’s Disney World, nobody cares what people do at Disney World.

Pro Tips For Visiting Galaxy’s Edge

If you didn’t read everything above, here is what you need to takeaway for visiting Galaxy’s edge:

We have been to Disney more times than we can count and we often get asked what our favorite rides are. We have gone back and forth about this through the years and finally decided to put together our rankings for the world to see. Before we get to the rankings – a couple of guidelines for the list.

1. When we say rides we are talking about the attractions that move and are available for the majority of the day. You will not see Carousel of Progress or the Main Street Vehicles on this list. We love both, just don’t think they should be on this ranking.
2. This is our rankings and our rankings only. It is totally fine to call us crazy (just do it in a nice way) and to disagree with us. Everyone is different and that is a good thing. That is why there are so many options.
3. We took just about everything into account in these rankings. We looked at wait times, smoothness, storytelling, the queue, thrill factor, overall enjoyment, even FASTPASS availability. The memories we have on the ride is something else we looked at. We tried to look at the overall ride experiences we have had with them.
4. Though we can’t necessarily handle all of the rides, we tried to look at the big picture. For instance, Megan isn’t a big fan of Tower of Terror (doesn’t like the big drops) but she understands the greatness of it as a ride, that is why it is high on the list.
5. These rankings are based on today. There are days where we will enter the parks and not want to ride our top ones, but will just want to go on Small World. This is the fun of Disney World. So much to do!
6. We like every single one of these rides and would gladly ride each and every one of them. None of this is hating any ride on the list.

So, without further ado, here is our official Walt Disney World Ride Rankings.

44. TriceraTop Spin

This is one of those carousel rides that take you up in the air located in Dino Land USA over in Animal Kingdom. There really isn’t much to this ride, pretty much just Dumbo with triceratops. You sit down next to each other and watch the land go by. There are some cool views of characters while you are there. This one is here because the theming of Dino Land is just weird and the story they are trying to tell is pretty out of place. You will hardly wait in line for this ride, and there is a reason for it. This is a GREAT ride for little kids.

43. Astro Orbiter

This ride is located in Tomorrowland over in Magic Kingdom. This ride is a lot like TriceraTop Spin just rocket themed. Astro Orbiter comes in slightly ahead for a couple of reasons. It sits atop the Launching Pad quick service restaurant. It is what you see straight ahead as you enter the land. Getting on the elevator to the rockets is pretty cool and the views from the ride are great. You get a really awesome perspective of the castle from up there. The problem with this ride though is it gets so hot up there! You will melt on a hot day. Another negative is it takes forever to load and has a pretty low ride capacity. A short line is still a long wait time. Finally, the rockets are pretty small and narrow. They are a bear to get in and out of. Very uncomfortable.

42. The Magic Carpets Of Aladdin

Here we go with our third aerial carousel in a row. Aladdin is located in Adventureland and allows you to fly in the air in a circle on your very own magic carpet. This one is second (there is one more of these at the parks) on the list of this type of ride because we are big Aladdin fans and there is a lot of excitement in this part of Adventureland. This area is always crowded and it is a good spot to people watch as you are flying around. You get good views of the Tiki Room, Aloha Isle, Jungle Cruise, and the marketplace. The controls on this ride typically work better on this one than the others. The controls allow you to go up and down and rock back and forth. You can actually get it going in a pretty fun way once you master the technique.

41. Spaceship Earth

And with this ranking, we just lost readers! We know that Spaceship Earth is a special ride to so many people. We loved it for years but right now it needs to change. This is a dark ride located in the icon of Epcot – the giant geodesic sphere (Epcot ball) that you see at the entrance to the park. This ride tells the story of humanity and looks forward to the future that is possible on the spaceship we all live on, Earth.

The problem with this ride is that it is dated and old. The last five times we have ridden on it we have been stuck. It breaks down all of the time. The last time we rode it it took us over an hour to ride it. It would go for a couple of hundred yards and then break down. It was brutal. The animatronics are fine, the story is decent, but it needs to be refurbished. By the way, Disney agrees with us. It is scheduled to go through a huge transformation over the next couple of years. We are excited to see what they will do with it. Pretty sure it will jump up higher on this list when it reopens. Having said all of that, if you have never been on this ride, you definitely need to do it. It is a classic.

40. Tomorrowland Speedway

Tomorrowland Speedway is a go cart track in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. It sits right across from Cosmic Ray’s. It recently was refurbished but the only thing they did was shorten the track to make some extra room for the TRON coaster they are building. Silas loves this because it gives him the chance to sit behind the wheel and go – seriously, what kid wouldn’t! However, the cars are gas powered and you can smell the fumes everywhere. We were hoping that they would change these to electric cars during the refurb, but that didn’t happen. The track gets pretty hot when you are riding under that Florida sun (and waiting in line). Also, the cars don’t go too fast. They kind of just creep around. We have some great memories from this ride, but it is not a must ride for us.

39. The Barnstormer

This one was tough to put this far down the list. The reason for that is because it was the first roller coaster Silas ever rode. He loved it then and really we all still love it today. It is a short, Goofy themed coaster perfect for kids. It is fun and well-themed over in the Storybook Circus area of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. We really don’t have anything negative to say about this ride, it was special to us when our boy was younger and will always be, but he has kind of grown out of it so we don’t ride it as much. It really is a great first coaster for kids. Also, from this point on we actually like all of these rides – but they still had to be ranked.

38. Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin

This ride drives us crazy! We love the idea behind it and the theming. We just can’t stand it, one of those love/hate deals. This is an interactive dark ride over in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. You get in your ride vehicle and shoot targets with the laser that is attached. There are a bunch of great rooms that you ride through to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg. There is a lot going on.

The problem with this ride though is the lasers seem to always be off line or not working at all. I know, it is easy to blame the equipment when you have a low score, but we are telling the truth! Every now and then though you get a good gun and you have the chance to get that 999,999 score and can earn the Galactic Hero button at the end of the ride (you have to take a picture and tell them you did it). We have both gotten this and yes we are bragging.

37. It’s A Small World

This is a classic dark ride on the main drag of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. This has one of the most iconic theme songs for any ride ever. It will get in your head and will stay there. That is not necessarily a good thing! This ride is full of Mary Blair designed animatronics that wave hello to you from all corners of the earth.

This ride is pretty easy to get a FASTPASS to and is a good place to get some air conditioning on a hot day. It is really beautiful inside with some bright colors and the clock in the queue area is fantastic. This one is ranked a little lower because it is constantly backed up towards the end (like Pirates). Whenever we ride it we are stopped as far back as the Oceania room. That wouldn’t be bad, except then you are listening to that song for a long time! Also, after going to Disneyland and seeing how much better theirs is, it is hard to ride with the same excitement level.

36. Living With The Land

This is a slow moving boat ride in The Land Pavilion of Epcot. It seeks to educate riders on how the land produces food and why it is important to take care of it. You get an up close view of how Disney grows some of the food that they serve on property. This ride is full of fun hidden Mickeys and pretty crazy plant life. There is also a section with some animatronics and nature scenes. This is a great place to relax, the line is pretty short most of the time and they will typically give you your own row.

35. Prince Charming Royal Carousel

This is the most magical carousel you will ever ride. It is located right behind the castle as you walk into Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. This is a must at least one time in your life. If you can, make sure you ride on Cinderella’s horse. It is the white one with the golden ribbon around the ponytail. Get it if you can!

34. Alien Swirling Saucers

This ride is in Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios (the first ride from this park on the list). It could have actually ranked it a little higher. This ride is based on the aliens from the Toy Story franchise. You get to get on board a rocket ship under the all-seeing claw and spin and twirl around while some great music is blasted on the loud. This is a pretty short ride and though not worth a really long wait, it is really fun.

Because the ride whips you around, you are able to have some fun with the people in your ride vehicles. Silas and I love building up momentum and smashing each other against the sides of the doors. We probably laugh on this ride more than on any other ride at Disney World. It is one of those rides that if you take it for what its worth you can have a lot of fun.

33. Mad Tea Party

This ride is another classic Fantasyland attraction in the Magic Kingdom. There never is a huge line, you can grab a FASTPASS pretty easily, and it is a good thing to hop on as you are passing by. The ride itself is beautiful and has that awesome Alice in Wonderland theme. You get to ride around in circles on a teacup. Who wouldn’t like that? We like this ride any way (it all depends on if Megan is riding). Sometimes we like to grab the center wheel and spin it as fast as we can go. The best is when you time it just right and start turning the other way when the tea cup is making its normal revolution. You get double the thrill. Sometimes though it is fun to just sit on it and watch the world go round. Win both ways.

32. Primeval Whirl

Primeval Whirl is located in Dino Land U.S.A. in Animal Kingdom. This is another one of those roadside carnival attractions that seem so out of place in this park. This is a wild mouse coaster which means it spins as it goes down the track. Pretty much tea cups on a roller coaster, except you don’t control the spin. This is not the most comfortable ride and can leave you feeling pretty stiff. It is fun and has a couple of unexpectedly thrilling drops. There are rumors that this one will be closing down, so get on it while you still can.

31. Mission: Space

Mission: Space is a centrifugal motion simulator in Future World (soon to be World Discovery) at Epcot. This is pretty much one of those Gravitron rides you see at local fairs that tilts and has a screen. This ride takes you on the X-2 spacecraft to complete one of two missions. The orange side is more intense and sends you to a simulated landing on Mars. The green side is less intense and takes you on a simulated orbit around the Earth. Of course both of these journeys have their ups and downs before you finally complete your mission.

This ride is not for the faint of heart. If you get motion sickness at all – don’t get on this ride. This one routinely gets shut down because people get sick and the cast members have to spend extra time cleaning out the pods. The theming of the ride is pretty good and the overhaul that this went through a couple of years back was definitely well needed (though I miss Lieutenant Dan). The line doesn’t get past 45 minutes too often and you can usually grab a FASTPASS. Definitely not the top tier of Disney rides but still pretty decent.

30. Jungle Cruise

Jungle Cruise is located in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. This is a great boat ride through the jungles of Africa, South America, and Asia. There are some great old school animatronics of animals throughout the ride. It is like a mechanical water Kilimanjaro Safari. The line can get really long here and it always feels like there are people trying to hop on this classic ride.

The highlight of the Jungle Cruise are the boat pilots of the Jungle Navigation Co. These are Disney cast members who come up with any and all puns they can think of to make you laugh. Most of the time we are laughing pretty hard because we love a good pun as much as the next person. Most of the time. The skipper definitely makes the difference on this one – luckily there are a ton of great ones out there. Get on the boat and go check out the back side of water!

29. Dumbo The Flying Elephant

This is the highest ranked aerial carousel on the list. This classic ride is located in Storybook Circus over in the Magic Kingdom. This is the ride where you get on Dumbo and fly round and round. They added a second Dumbo ride during the last expansion and that has helped with wait times. The reason why this one is ranked higher than the others is because it is a classic! It is always fun to circle the fountain on Dumbo with Timothy Mouse watching you. Wait times are typically short and they have a great play area for little kids for you to enjoy while you wait. Even if you aren’t going to ride the ride, you should still check out the wait area play zone.

28. Gran Fiesta Tour

This is one of the two ride attractions at the World Showcase in Epcot. That will change soon with the Ratatouille ride in the France Pavilion scheduled to open in 2020. Gran Fiesta Tour is located in the Mexico Pavilion inside of the Mesoamerican pyramid. This is a slow moving boat ride that stars the Three Caballeros (Donald Duck, Panchito Pistoles, and Jose Carioca). Donald has gone missing and the ride centers around Panchito and Jose traveling through Mexico to find him. They do at the end and there is a great celebration as their animatronics perform under fireworks. This is a great scene!

We really like this ride because there is never a line – you will never wait more than 10 minutes. It also is one of those great places to duck (pardon the pun) inside, relax, and cool off. The music is awesome and it is a Donald Duck themed ride! Always good to see him get some love. Fun fact: Panchito is the leader of the Caballeros and he is the only one of Mexican descent. Donald is American and Jose is Brazilian.

27. The Seas With Nemo And Friends

This is a really cool dark ride that takes you through the movie Finding Nemo. It is located in the Seas Pavilion in Epcot. This is an easy in and out ride that you don’t need a FASTPASS to most of the time. The animation is really cool here. Fun fact, they wrote the song specifically for this ride. This ride ends in the aquarium and the last couple of scenes have a projection in the water of the actual aquarium. It is cool to see the characters of Nemo with real-life sharks and rays. This ride is great for kids and people who love the movie.

26. Journey Into Imagination With Figment

Figment rules! Don’t say anything bad about him. We love Figment, the unofficial ambassador of Epcot. His ride is located in Future World West at Epcot. It is the building with the glass pyramids. This dark ride takes you on a journey into your imagination where you got to see how your senses work (Silas loves the skunk scene). Eventually Figment takes over the ride and things start to get crazy. You get to check out Figment’s house and some other super weird scenes. All in all you get to listen to a good soundtrack and relax as you journey through your imagination. The line isn’t too long typically but get there before 7 pm because that is when they normally close.

25. Na’vi River Journey

The River Journey is located in Pandora at Animal Kingdom. This is a very impressive dark boat ride through the jungles of Pandora. They do a really great job with the black lighting and projection. The Pandorian (?) animals really pop out and it feels like you are right in the middle of them. The flowers and plants are awesome too. It really is beautiful in there. The highlight is the Na’vi animatronic towards the end of the ride. It is impressive, most impressive. And that song will get stuck in your head! Also, try and find the hidden Yoda at the end.

The ride though is pretty short, only a couple of minutes. Also, the boats are small and they try and squeeze four adults in there at once. Every time Megan and I have gone by ourselves they put us in with another couple. It is no fun at all rubbing legs with a sweaty dude. It is beautiful but not out of this world awesome. Good ride to do if you get a FASTPASS, but not worth a wait over an hour.

24. Kali River Rapids

Silas is mad that this is so far down the list, but he has to understand one thing. This is a classic river rapid ride but it is missing something – the ability to consistently get soaked. It really is hit or miss on whether or not you get wet. There have been times I have gone on this ride and only had a few drops of water land on me. When I ride something like this, I would like to get at least a light soaking. Still, we really do like this ride a lot.

This ride is located in Asia in the Animal Kingdom. It takes you on the Chakranadi River through the Kali Rapids Expeditions company. One of the cool things is seeing what raft you are getting on. They all have names. It is a beautiful ride all of the way through. The scenery is great along the rivers and you have some cool views of the Forbidden Mountain. The queue area is awesome as it takes you through temples and the company offices. This ride talks about the dangers of deforestation and the impact it can have on the environment.

Kali is pretty easy to get a FASTPASS to, though it is more difficult the hotter it gets. During the cooler months it is pretty much a walk on unless it is down for refurbishment.

23. Pirates Of The Caribbean

Pirates is located in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. This has gone through a bunch of different refurbishments, but the story remains pretty much the same. A bunch of pirates doing pirate things. Of course now, Captain Jack Sparrow is running wild. There is a pretty fun little drop at the beginning (which actually is where the Walt Disney World Railroad crosses).

This has the highest ride capacity in Magic Kingdom and the line moves pretty quickly even when there are a ton of people in line. This definitely is a classic and one that every Disney fan needs to ride. By the way, this is ranked here because we have been to Disneyland and that version is so much better. Sorry!

22. The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh

This ride is in Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom right across from Mine Train. It takes up the spot once held by Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. We love Pooh and love the story. This is a really fun dark ride that takes you through the Hundred Acre Wood and inside of Pooh’s dreams. It is bright and colorful and really fun. There is a great little play area for kids in the queue area. Get in a honey pot and check out Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Tigger, and all of your favorite characters.

21. Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion is a really fun “haunted house” dark ride in Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom. The ride takes you on a tour of the house with the help of your ghost host. There are 999 happy haunts on this ride but there is room for one more. After riding through the home and hearing and seeing the ghosts and the stories behind the ghosts you get to head out to the graveyard outside. This is a really great scene with some funny things along with some legitimately scary things for kids.

There are so many little fun facts about this ride, too many for this post. This is for both in and outside of the ride. The queue itself has so much to look at. The stretching room, the ballroom, Madam Leota – it is all good and all fun.

20. Star Tours

Star Tours is in Hollywood Studios over by Echo Lake. It is a simulator that allows you to join the Rebel Alliance by helping get a spy to a Rebel base. C-3PO is your pilot and he leads you all over the galaxy trying to connect with other Rebel leaders. We are a Star Wars family so we try and ride this attraction any chance we can. The cool thing about this is the scenes are constantly changing and there are so many different options that you can ride this all day and not have the same experience. Our favorites have to do with the original trilogy, they are great!

19. Peoplemover

This ride is the ultimate chill spot at Walt Disney World. It is located in the middle of Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. You take an escalator up to the platform and hop on the ride vehicle. The vehicle is a car on a train that sits on a conveyer belt. This belt takes you all around Tomorrowland. You get some great views of the land and you even get a nice view of the castle. You get to go through rides like Buzz and Space Mountain – it really is a great way to see the park. This is not a thrill ride at all, it is a relaxing place to kick up your feet and check things out. The wait goes pretty quick even if the line is long because the ride is constantly moving.

18. Peter Pan’s Flight

This ride is an absolute classic. You have to get to Peter Pan any chance you get. This ride is right in the middle of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. You get to jump on a pirate ship sprinkled with Pixie Dust and fly off to Neverland. On the ride you soar over London before taking off towards the second star on the right and straight on til morning.

You get to check out some classic scenes featuring Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, and Captain Hook. You also get to see the Lost Boys, the mermaids, Wendy, Michael, and John, Mr. Smee, and of course Tick-Tock Croc. This ride is pretty short and the wait is always long. It is also pretty tough to get a FASTPASS unless you get one far in advance by staying on property. One good thing about the wait though is the queue is awesome. You can chase shadows and hang out with Tinker Bell. Super cool.

17. Frozen Ever After

Some of you might be upset that this one is too high (we miss Maelstrom too), others might not think it is high enough. We think it is right here at the beginning of the really great rides at Walt Disney World. Frozen is in the Norway Pavilion of the World Showcase in Epcot. It is in the same place as the aforementioned Maelstrom ride (even using the same ride vehicles). To many, this ride signaled the beginning of the end of Epcot – moving from “Walt’s vision” to the land of the IPs. That is another post in and of itself, but to us, this is a really fun ride that does a good job telling a story.

This is a boat ride with a couple of pretty fun little drops (one even goes backwards). The ride tells the story of going to Elsa’s ice palace for the Summer Snow Day Festival to commemorate the day that Anna saved Elsa and the kingdom through her act of love. Along the way you get to see some of the best animatronics on property of your favorite characters – Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, the trolls, and so many more. These characters are singing the soundtrack to the movie which is pretty cool. Disney really did a great job with the ride, whether you believe it should be there or not.

This line can get pretty long, usually over an hour, and it is difficult to get a FASTPASS because the ride capacity is so low. The queue is pretty awesome though so the wait goes pretty fast.

16. Journey Of The Little Mermaid

This is the highest ranked dark ride on the list mainly because Megan is a big Little Mermaid fan (there are other reasons). This ride is located in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom. It tells the story of the Little Mermaid movie with some really great animatronics and music. There are so many bright colors and awesome scenes (though I have always thought it ends kind of abruptly. There is never a really long line here and it moves pretty quickly. You can almost always get a FASTPASS for it as well. Our favorite scene is probably the massive “Under the Sea” song scene. There are so many different characters throwing a huge undersea party. It really is pretty cool, hard not to sing along.

15. Test Track

Test Track is over in Future Word (soon to be World Discover) at Epcot. It is the fastest ride on Disney property and is a pretty fun experience. You get to design your own car and test it out on their ‘test track’. Silas absolutely loves designing the car and syncing it up to the ride vehicle. You get points based on how you design it. Our high is 224. He always goes pure power because who cares about the environment in an imaginary world (we do in real life, thank you).

This and Frozen are the two most difficult to FASTPASS at Epcot, but it is possible to snag one day of. The design process does take a while, one of those rides that take about 30 minutes to do so be prepared for that. The indoor part of this ride is great swerving back and forth and accelerating before slamming on brakes. The highlight though is seeing how fast you can go and whipping around the turn outside. This is just pure fun (and you can see a lot of Epcot from here). After the ride there are some virtual race tracks that you can test your car out on, so don’t forget about those. Pretty cool too.

14. Soarin’ Around The World

Soarin’ is located in The Land Pavilion at Epcot. This is a flight motion simulator that takes you on a trip around the world. A couple of years ago they changed the Epcot ride from Soarin’ Over California to Soarin’ Around The World. Now, you get to board a plane and visit some of the most famous places in the world. The ride lifts you up in the air so you are dangling high up and you get to watch a massive screen in front of you. The ride moves along with the screen so it looks and feels like you are flying.

You fly over the pyramids of Egypt, the African savannah, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, and many other places before finishing up at Epcot. This ride does take forever to load, so don’t think you will get over there real quick to ride it. Also, ask for the middle. If you are on the sides everything looks crooked and curved. It really takes away from the experience.

13. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

At the time of writing, this is the newest ride in the Magic Kingdom. Located in Fantasyland, this is a cool swinging coaster that takes you on a trip in and around the mine the Seven Dwarfs work. There are some really great twist and turns and a couple of good thrills, but it is definitely not an intense coaster. This one is family friendly for sure. The animatronics on this ride are amazing. Riding through the mine you get a great scene with the Dwarfs singing about their work. At the end of the ride you get to look inside their home where they are having a dance party with Snow White. They did a great job with this.

Because of the popularity of this ride, it is best to rope drop this first thing or get a FASTPASS. These are tough to get day of, but you can do it. There are some cool things in the queue. When you get to the spinning barrels try and get them all going at the same time – you will get to see some Disney magic.

12. Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain is a classic log flume ride in Frontierland in Magic Kingdom. This ride tells the story of the controversial film Song of the South. I think Disney has pulled that from everything, but the ride still stands. This is a long ride that takes about 11 minutes if there are no stops. Along the way there are three mini-drops before you get to the final one. The last drop is awesome and you can get pretty wet on it. There are other places where you can get wet too, I think Disney controls it for more water on warmer days (unconfirmed theory).

Lines can get pretty long here but we never have trouble scoring a day of FASTPASS. If you like thrill rides you have to ride this one!

11. Dinosaur

We believe this to be the most underrated ride in all of Walt Disney World. This ride is fantastic. This is an Enhance Motion Vehicle ride in Dino Land U.S.A. in Animal Kingdom. This ride is super thrilling and so much fun. The idea behind this ride is you are going back in time to capture an iguadon to save dinosaurs from extinction. Unfortunately, you were dropped off right before the asteroid hit that wiped out all of the dinosaurs. So, you have to grab the dino and travel back in time before the asteroid hits you. If it is confusing, don’t worry, Claire Huxtable will explain everything to you before you ride.

The “Time Rover” that you are riding on takes you on a track with plenty of bumps and turns. It accelerates pretty well and flings you all over the place. Along the way you come in contact with plenty of dinosaurs, some out to get you. Unfortunately, those are not your dinos so you have to continue your search. There are a couple of really scary parts for young kids. We have seen more than one get off the ride in tears, so keep that in mind. This really is a great ride that will have you laughing the whole time – and the picture you get from it is one of the best ones out there.

10. Expedition Everest

Everest is a great ride to start our Top 10. This ride is located in Asia in Animal Kingdom and is fantastic! This is one of the most intense roller coasters on property. Though it is called Expedition Everest, you never actually make it to Everest. The ride takes place on the Forbidden Mountain (on the way to Everest) where the Yeti lives. The Yeti has taken out the tracks which leads to pure chaos. You go up, down, forwards, and backwards trying to get away from the Yeti. It is crazy fun. If you get motion sick, you might not want to ride this as the backwards drops will get to you.

The queue is incredible telling the story of the Yeti and all of the attacks that have been attributed to it. There is a really cool animatronic Yeti in the ride that broke a couple of years ago. Disney didn’t want to fix it so they just put a strobe light there to make it seem like it moves. So, that is why it is called the Disco Yeti. There is a single rider line here, but a lot of times if there is a line there it could be faster to do stand-by.

9. The Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror

This ride is located in Hollywood Studios and is one of the most fun experiences you can have in Disney World. It is a drop tower ride. Pretty much you go straight up and straight down over and over again. The ride goes up and down multiple times in different ways. It keeps you guessing. There are a ton of screams and laughs coming from the ride vehicle. Nothing like feeling your stomach in your throat.

There is a great story behind this ride. The theming is fantastic throughout the queue, and the pre-show is pretty good too. You can typically get a FASTPASS day of, which you need because the line can get super long! This is also the icon of Hollywood Studios now that the water tower is gone.

8. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

At the time of this writing this is the newest ride attraction at Walt Disney World. This ride is over in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios. This ride allows you to actually fly the Millennium Falcon. It is so fun to take the controls of the Falcon and make the jump to light speed. All of my childhood fantasies came true when I looked over at Silas, yelled out “punch it Chewie” and he sent us off. It is ridiculously awesome. We have absolutely nothing negative to say about this ride except you could get motion sickness. This ride is like Soarin’ and Mania combined but you get to control it.

The theming on the ride is great, the queue is incredible (you can sit at the table where they played space chess), and the story behind it is fantastic. You get to be either a pilot, gunner, or engineer. For my money pilot is best, but they all can be fun. Honestly, the ride is great, but just being able to walk around the Falcon is too cool. As soon as you can, go and ride this ride.

7. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster

This is an Aerosmith themed coaster in Hollywood Studios. You get to ride in a super stretch limo vehicle and speed through Los Angeles traffic in order to get to the show on time. This coaster launches you at the beginning and it brings tears to your eyes because of the sudden acceleration. This is an indoor coaster and everything is black except for the blacklight street signs. This is the only coaster on Disney World property that goes upside down. It is fast and it is fun.

The whole time you have Aerosmith blasting in your ears. We are not the biggest Aerosmith fans, but we love the fact that music is playing. We wish more rides had this feature. This ride is over in about two minutes. It is really short. But, you get to those backstage passes with plenty of time. Also, the pre-show is one of the best (cheesiest) of all the attractions on this list.

6. Kilimanjaro Safaris

Can’t afford a trip to Africa? Just head to Animal Kingdom and go to Africa and get on a safari. On second thought, a trip to the real Africa might be cheaper. This ride is phenomenal! It takes you through a makeshift savannah and allows you to go on safari to check out a ton of animals. You get to get up close and personal to giraffes, crocodiles, rhinos, hippos, and lions. It is a wonderful experience for any age. The drivers are knowledgable and give you plenty of information (a flock of flamingos is called a flamboyance). Do this on any trip to Animal Kingdom. It takes a while, but it is worth it!

5. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

This is the Wildest Ride In The Wilderness located over in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom. This ride is so much fun and we absolutely love it. It is a really great fast feeling roller coaster with plenty of ups and downs but no major drops. It whips you around in a really great way and takes you by the Rivers of America. The backstory of this ride is pretty cool, an old mining town called Tumbleweed sprouted up on a cursed Native American burial ground which caused the town to get flooded. Now the trains are riding around the tracks with no conductor. Pretty cool. We love seeing all of the different animals around the track and try to point them out to each other. No trip to Magic Kingdom is complete until we hop on one of these trains.

4. Avatar Flight Of Passage

This ride is simply incredible and could easily be at the top of this list. It is located in Pandora in Animal Kingdom. There are two reasons why this ride is not #1 and I am going to get them out of the way. The main reason is this ride takes way too long to load. I would rather wait in line than watch a ridiculous video explaining what is happening. I know, sounds dumb, but the videos in TWO DIFFERENT ROOMS are just bad (thanks to science). It takes 30-40 minutes to ride with a FASTPASS. The second reason is there is always a 2-hour plus wait time. In order to rope drop this you have to get there an hour or more before the park opens so you are still waiting two hours.

This ride is based off of the Avatar movie – the second-highest grossing film of all-time that nobody remembers. The idea is that you ride on a Banshee, a giant flying beast from that movie. In order to fly on the banshee you have to be genetically linked to your Na’vi avatar (again, thanks to science). You get to go to a room with a giant screen much like Soarin’ and climb on your Banshee (it is like getting on a bike). This is really cool and while you are “flying” you can actually feel your “Banshee” breathing if you press your legs against the vehicle.

The Banshee follows the movements of the screen, it really feels like you are flying. The animation is perfect and beautiful. The wind is blowing in your face, water is splashing on you, they did an amazing job. This ride is sooooo good. The queue area is pretty cool too, the best part though is the mountains that make up the outside of it. Some really pretty scenery and a great place to grab a picture. This ride is close to perfect and will have long lines for years to come.

3. Space Mountain

This ride is perfect. We love it so much and would hate to visit Magic Kingdom and not try it out. This iconic ride is in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom. We love coming in on the monorail and seeing this beautiful structure. That is when we know we have arrived. You can usually get a FASTPASS but you might have to pound the app for a while. There is a good Play Disney game on the app you can enjoy in the queue.

Space Mountain is an indoor, dark roller coaster. There are two tubes of light that you pass through, but besides that you are in the dark flying through space. The ride doesn’t get above 30 mph but because you are in the dark it feels like you are going way faster. Another really great thing about this ride is you can’t tell where you are going because of the dark. We have ridden this thing close to 100 times and we still don’t know what the next move is. There are two different tracks on the Disney World version, both of them are unique and both equally fun. Hopefully you can check out both of them on your next trip!

2. Slinky Dog Dash

Slinky Dog Dash is one of the two newer additions to Toy Story Land over in Hollywood Studios. Disney Imagineers thought of the idea of Andy creating a roller coaster in his backyard and the visitors to the land (the toys) get to ride on it. This is an awesome ride that is so much fun. We love going on this ride at night. It is one of the most beautiful areas in all of Walt Disney World. And, because there are so many fireworks at the Studios there is a good chance you can catch a ride with them exploding right over your head. It is super cool.

This coaster is definitely the smoothest at Disney. It might not be the fastest or the most thrilling, but it is a great combination of everything. The ride takes you by surprise. You think it is going to go fast and it slows you down to make you feel like you are floating. You think you are going to go slow and it shoots you up a ramp. There is just a great feel to this ride. Pro tip, try and ride on the back. You can feel the ups and downs a little better and it seems like you go faster. This is the most difficult FASTPASS in all of Disney World right now, but the queue and Disney Play game are both great. It is worth the wait however.

1. Toy Story Mania!

This ride is the one ride we have to ride each and every single time we go to Walt Disney World. We absolutely love this ride. This ride is located in Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios. That’s right, 5 of our Top 10 rides are in the Studios. This park used to be a joke, now it is simply awesome, and getting better!

In Mania, you put on 3-D glasses and jump on a vehicle that takes you to different screens. These screens have different carnival style games that you get to play. You play by using the pull-string gun attached to your vehicle. You break dishes, ring aliens, hit targets, you get the idea. If you are doing it right, by the end of the ride your arm will be burning and you will be laughing so hard. Each vehicle holds four people, two to a side.

What a lot of people don’t understand about this ride is that there are secrets that help you get higher scores. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there showing you how to get them. We have gotten pretty good at getting the secrets, but we still can’t get the scores that some others have put up. We can’t move our arms fast enough! This game is super fun because every time you are trying to get better than the time before.

It is also fun because you are competing agains other people. On our last trip this guy was super pumped that he got over 200,000 points and his friend looked over at Megan’s score and said “she beat you”. The dude was mortified that this mom took him out. Made her whole night. Also, this ride allows you to work together as a team. The better teamwork you have the higher your points will be (for the casual competitors). The more you understand this ride the more fun you will have.

You can get a FASTPASS for this ride relatively easily, just keep pounding that app. Also, the queue is one of the best on property. The Potato Head animatronic is fantastic. All of these reasons make it our number 1!

4 Park Challenge

This is the classic Disney World challenge. The general idea behind this is that you have to go to each park in one calendar day. In order to participate in this challenge you obviously have to have a park hopper ticket or some sort of annual pass. There are a ton of different takes on this challenge. For us, in order for it to qualify as a four park challenge day we have to take a picture in front of the icon, ride one e-ticket attraction, watch one show, and get one thing to eat at each park. We love to do this on our last day of our trip so that we can say goodbye to each park.

Around The World Challenge

This challenge is an EPCOT specific challenge. The goal of this challenge is to walk around the world and get something to eat or drink in each country. This is a super fun challenge and a great way for Silas to have fun doing the KidCot or some of the other festival scavenger hunts while we enjoy some yummy food and drink. There is no better time to do this than when the sun is going down over World Showcase Lagoon.

Close Down The Park Challenge

This is one of the truly difficult challenges that will test your endurance. In order to win the Close Down The Park Challenge you must be at either one of the four parks at rope drop (when the park opens) and stay there for the entire day. You are not allowed to leave until the park is officially closed. There is no going back to the resort for an afternoon break. This one is serious. Don’t try this in the middle of the summer. It is best to do this on one of the 12-hour days.

Roller Coaster Challenge

This challenge is just how it sounds. You have to do all of the roller coasters at Walt Disney World. This is one of the most fun Disney World challenges. As of the writing of this post, there are 8 roller coasters at the World. Magic Kingdom has 4 (Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Barnstormer), Animal Kingdom has 2 (Expedition Everest, Primeval Whirl), and Hollywood Studios has 2 (Rockin’ Roller Coaster, Slinky Dog Dash). In the next couple of years EPCOT is getting the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster and Magic Kingdom is adding TRON. This will put the total to 10. Go ahead and do this challenge now and see if you can complete it again when the other two are finished.

Instagram Walls of Challenge

If you didn’t already know this, Instagram is a huge deal amongst Disney fans. It is so big that there are a bunch of different walls that have their own Instagram pages. The most famous of these is the Purple Wall in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom. However, there are many more that are making a name for themselves. The goal of this challenge is to take a picture in front of as many Instagram walls that you can find. A fun take on this is to come up with some new walls as you are walking around. It is a great way to pay attention to the details of Disney. You will see so many new things just by going on a little scavenger hunt.

All Attractions Challenge

Now we are getting to some of the big ones. In the All Attractions Challenge you must experience every attraction that a park (pick one of the 4) has to offer. Remember, at WDW attractions are more than just rides. This can be a daunting task but one that you can accomplish. Animal Kingdom currently has 38 official attractions per the WDW website. However, things like lions and hippos are each mentioned. These (and many others) can be seen at one time by going on Kilimanjaro Safaris. There is plenty of overlap. Really those 38 are more like 22 when you look at it like that. Of course, Magic Kingdom has a ton more – but on a longer day you can definitely do it! Officially, there are 167 total attractions at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Chillax Challenge

This is a challenge that Silas made up on one of our trips. We were on our last day and he wanted to check out a couple of things in each park. We had absolutely no to-do list. All we wanted to do was take our time in each park and enjoy the day. We had an awesome breakfast and stroll around the World Showcase at Epcot played Toy Story Mania at Hollywood Studios, rode Space Mountain one last time and got an ice cream at the Plaza in Magic Kingdom, and snagged a Flight of Passage FastPass at Animal Kingdom. We just did some of our faves at each park chillaxing the whole time. No rush, just fun.

Transportation Challenge

This is one that we haven’t done yet but will on our next time down there. We want to ride all of the (free) Disney transportation in a day outside of the actual theme parks. Right now, the different modes/areas of transportation are monorail (to MK and EPCOT), tram, resort bus, ferry to MK, friendship boats between HS and EPCOT, friendship boats from Disney Springs, resort boats to MK, and soon the gondolas. There might be more that we are missing, but we think that is it. Our suggested route is park at MK parking lot, tram to ticket and transportation center, monorail to MK entrance, ferry back to TTC, monorail to EPCOT, boat to HS, gondola to Art of Animation Resort, bus to Disney Springs, boat to Port Orleans, bus to MK, resort boat to Polynesian, walk to TCC. Sounds ridiculous, but could be fun?

All Rides Challenge

This, in my humble opinion, is the most difficult of all of the Disney World challenges. If you can complete this than you are truly a Disney master. The idea of this challenge is to ride every ride on property in one park day. If you are going to do this one, your FastPass game needs to be on point!

There are different ideas for what a ride is. I do not have an issue with anyones definition of a ride, but I do have my own. For this challenge, I define a ride as something that is open all day and is not primarily a show. Because of this, I take Main Street Vehicles (those old-timey cars and fire trucks) off of the list because they are not operating the whole day, just at the beginning of the day. I also take Carousel of Progress off of the ride list. If you have those two on your list, that is awesome, one of the best things about Disney is that you can do it however you want to! As of the writing of this post there are 46 rides at the four main parks.

I have tried this challenge only one time. I was able to join the 40 club, but fell short ending at 43. Unfortunately, I lost the challenge for three reasons that cost me about three hours of my day. Someone got sick on Mission Space and I was stuck on the ride for 40 minutes. When I got on Spaceship Earth the ride broke down for 25 minutes. I could not get a FastPass for Flight of Passage and had to stand in line for about two hours. Fun fact, that day was the only day that I did not get a FOP FP when I tried to. Every other time I have tried I was able to get one. If everything would have broke right for me, I think I could have accomplished it. These guys had a different experience.

Also, I walked over 25 miles that day and the next day I could hardly walk. I needed a whole day to recover. Vacation is relaxing.
